Description
This listing is for a silver plate cake stand or centerpiece basket which was manufactured by the Meriden Silver Plate Company for the Rogers & Smith Silver Company from the late 1800's. The book American Silver Plate by Dorothy and Ivan Rainwater features the basket on page 229 and gives the date of production as 1886The figural basket is exceptional in detail and design. A chickadee rests in the opening on each side of the basket guarding the contents. Each of the end panels features birds in flight on a background of flowers. The four sturdy feet are East lake in design. The fret work supports on either side of the handle are free of breaks and re-welds. Each of the chickadee's on each side is flanked by branches of flowers and leaves. The basket stands about 9.5 inches tall, 10.5 inches wide and 6.75 inches from front to back. There are no visible repairs or monograms and the silver plate is in good condition.Please scroll down to view all the pictures.
