Description
John Sherwood & Sons c.1865 English Silverplate Silver Plated Ornate Floral Repousse Swing Handle Footed BasketFor your consideration I have a rare, ornate 19th century English silver plated dessert basket by John Sherwood & Sons. Sherwood was active in Birmingham, solely from the time period of 1839 and later as John Sherwood and Son. They advertised in 1869 as manufacturers of silver and electroplated goods of every description. This fine and early basket has a swing handle that features an ornate twig, leaf and vine handle. Basket stands on four detailed claw and foot feet. The interior of basket is hand chased with a very beautiful floral repousse center oval surrounded by floral swags at end and each side of the oval. The rim of the basket has scrolls surrounding the bowl area. The outer rim is decorated with leaves, berries, florals and more! There is so much great detail to this basket that you really have to study it to take it all in!
Length is 12 1/2 inches
Width is 9 1/2 at widest point
Height of basket at ends as it flares upward is 3 1/2 inches
Condition is overall good for this antique 19th century piece but please read closely as it does have a few issues I want to point out. I have not polished it but there is a bit of plate wear to the interior bottom of basket in 2 areas. It certainly does not detract and is to be expected to have some age related wear of antique silver. The handle appears to have possibly had a repair on one side where it connects to basket however, it is possible that it is just missing the silver cap piece that exists on the other side of handle. The handle still works fine. You do not notice this unless you turn over to inspect it. The handle also seems a bit off center when it is fully upright when you are looking at the length of the basket. As it sits on table there is some play in which side foot is down. It is a bit uneven in that respect but you don't really notice it ... these are things that could easily be repaired but not necessary. It displays well and is very serviceable for its mid 19th century age!
There are spots of tarnish throughout but overall this basket has developed that beautiful patina that antique silver develops over time. I have pictured the marks in one of the photos. They are as follows: JS&S , left facing beaver, crown, A.
It is a beautiful 19th century English silver basket and would make a fine addition to any collection. A wonderful item to use in serving cookies, goodies, appetizers, just about anything you can imagine will present well in this lovely basket and especially gorgeous for the Holiday season!
