Description
Offered is this antique oval silverplate basket or pedestal dish. The piece has a design of grapes and grape leaves on the rim of both the basket and the foot. A narrow reticulated or pierced band separates the basket rim from the main rayed basket design. The piece was made by Rogers, Smith & Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. The company was founded in 1857 and relocated to New Haven in 1862 before the company became a subsidiary of Meriden Britannia a few years later-the bottom mark of "Hartford" dates this to the 1857-1862 period. This came from an antebellum home in Georgia; I have no way of knowing when the family acquired it but it is at least possible that it has been in the home since the Civil War.The piece is approx. 10 1/2" x 8", with the main portion approx. 3" high. The most obvious problem is that the handle is broken, but present, as shown. Otherwise, I see no damage to the metal itself, although the curve to the rim may have been bent slightly in places, I'm not sure. Almost all of the plating is intact, but there is some corrosion to the plating and other wear in the center of the bowl. There are some areas of tarnish.
Perhaps someone with the right skill can repair the broken handle, or maybe this beautiful Civil War-era piece can still be enjoyed "as is".
