Description
1873 Antique Sheffield Silverplare Basket by Atkin
This is a handsome, quality bowl or basket from a silversmith of nineteenth century England. It is 10.5 inches long and 8 inches wide. The reticulated work on the sides is its most appealing feature, but the fine beaded work on the top and bottom is also attractive. The nature of the reticulation is called quatrefoil. This is a silverplate piece but one of the highest quality Sheffield pieces, dating to 1873. I have shown the marks in the last picture. The date can be determined from the F in the diamond-shaped registry mark (the English were very careful in these matters). The maker was the Harry Atkin Company, a firm started in the 1700's and continued for many decades after its principal, Harry Atkin. The marks on the piece are HA EA FA EPA all representing members of the Atkin family. The bowl or basket is in excellent condition. Indeed it is hard to photograph because it is so shiny, so you will need to excuse the reflections. The bowl weighs almost 1.5 pounds, to give another indication of the quality.
